A paralegal is defined as an individual that is educated and further trained to assist a lawyer in performing legal tasks. They are commonly refereed as legal assistants. Paralegals are equipped with the knowledge and expertise on the legal system and procedural law allowing them to perform some legal task under the supervision of an attorney. The basic work of a paralegal is to do research on cases, gather information and organize legal documents.

The education needed in order to become a paralegal are: BS in paralegal studies, BS in legal studies, Post-Baccalaureate Pathway to Paralegal Certificate, Advanced Start in BS Paralegal Studies, Associate's in paralegal studies, AS in Legal Assisting and Paralegal, and Master of Professional Studies in Paralegal Studies.

Aside from obtaining proper education on paralegal studies, skills are needed in order to work effectively and provide effective services to clients. The skills that should be developed by a paralegal includes Good writing and communication skills, the ability to prioritize and work under a tight schedule, can perform legal research, computer skills, in- depth knowledge of legal terminologies and principles and the ability to accurately analyze legal documents.

Obtaining paralegal studies is not easy and it can be quite difficult to study the law and legal matters. But with the right determination to obtain the degree, it is highly possible to finish the study. Many universities are now offering paralegal courses and there are also paralegal courses that can be obtained online. This will help many individuals pursuing a career on the paralegal field.

Many individuals nowadays want to pursue paralegal studies and work as a paralegal in the future specifically as an immigration paralegal because of the huge compensation of immigration paralegals. An immigration paralegal earns $49,000 annually on average. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the legal profession is now constantly in demand of paralegals today. Furthermore, it is expected that the job demand for immigration paralegals will increase as the population continues to increase.
